Ever dreamt of hosting your own radio show? Have you got a lot to say? Maybe you want to target people on the go so your audience can take you everywhere? Maybe it’s time to Podcast! Podcasts have become unbelievably popular in the past few years. Covering a wide range of topics, genres and structures.
Podcasts now appeal to a massive 7.1 million people a week in the UK alone (Ofcom). Breaking that down, it means that 1 in 8 people are now listening to a podcast, this is a huge audience you could potentially be tapping in to. You may be thinking the trend is slowing down, but actually, it’s quite the opposite. Studies show that more and more people are listening to podcasts than ever before. If you think that no-one is going to be listening you’d be surprised to know that people who listen to podcasts on average listen to 7 different shows (Ofcom).
So why are podcasts so appealing?
First and foremost they allow people to save time. It’s easy to digest information whilst listening. Not only that, but it saves time in the sense that you don’t have to be sitting still to take in all of the information. For instance, you can now go for a run, commute in your car, or go for a walk all whilst listening to a podcast. As we know that can be very difficult to do whilst trying to read, not to mention not very safe.
On that same note, simply put they also allow you to multitask. You can cook, clean or even work at the same time as listening to your favourite show. It’s easily digestible content and more importantly entertaining!
Plus with the vast number of streaming platforms, you can now favourite, listen later and be updated when the latest episode of your podcast is out. All of these things combine to make a media that is fun, easy to digest, readily available and easy to access. Giving you ultimately an incredibly easy reach to a massive audience.
Why should I use a podcast to engage my audience?
Much like a lot of marketing you do, there’s a lot of reasons. Perhaps you want to attract new audiences and get discovered? An excellent podcast will most definitely help you do that. Not just locally but all over the world. Or maybe you want to build loyalty with your audience, you’ll be able to get your audience coming back to listen to what you have to say. You could even build trust by offering value to your listeners. This can be done by giving great tips and insights into your industry.
Ultimately offering value to your audience can be one of the best things you can do to build trust. If your audience can see you really know what you’re talking about, they’ll be more likely to use a service or buy a product from you. If done successfully all of these things combined can be a truly great magnet to engage new and old audiences.
How do I create a great podcast?
Firstly you need the tools! Don’t worry this doesn’t have to be expensive and you probably have a lot of this already. If you don’t there’s a lot of free digital tools out there to take advantage of. Firstly a good quality microphone, this could be an inexpensive USB mic or even your phone. You might want to invest in some audio editing software, so you can cut things out, add jingles and build an intro and outro. But, you could just use an app like Anchor that lets you do the whole show from just your mobile phone!
You’ll need to find a platform to host your podcast on once edited, once again there is a number of free services to do so. From iTunes, Anchor and even Spotify. Next, you’ll need to be able to share it. You can embed it in a blog post, your website and even share it on your social media profiles.
Come up with a clever name that immediately shouts what your podcast is about and catches people’s eye. Think about a script or topic you want to discuss. Are you going to invite guests to join you on your podcast? Plan out your episode structure. Develop a marketing strategy to help boost listeners. Produce some cracking artwork. Devise your episode title, description and tags. Record and share!
