The makers of Snapchat bring you Spectacles. What is/are Spectacles? They are glorified glasses, a “cheaper Google Glass”; and a “toy” as said by CEO of Snap Inc. This week Snapchat makers announced a new piece of hardware: ‘Spectacles’, and their rebranding: Snapchat Inc. to Snap Inc.
We are audiovisual creators, video is our passion, telling stories is what we do and snapchat offers that on a personal and corporate level. Users share their day-to-day antics through their ‘story’, and now hundreds of businesses use the platform to sell their products, showcase the inner workings of their companies and engage with their audience in a completely different way. But, Spectacles seem like just a gimmick.
With a tap of a button on the left arm you can start recording for 10 seconds, with a second tap record for 30 seconds. A ring of white lights light up to let everyone know what you’re doing (learning from the mistake that Google made with Google Glass), and thats it; you’re capturing circular video – which is pretty cool.
“Circular video plays full screen on any device, in any orientation, and captures the human perspective with a 115-degree field of view,” the makers said in a blog post.
They are designed to work with Snapchat, and Snapchat only, transferring video directly to your smartphone via Bluetooth or WiFi. They make capturing memories easier, allowing you to capture those moments that you otherwise would have missed whilst you pulled your phone out of your pocket, and they look…funky.
What do you think of Spectacles. An expensive (£100) toy, or a new way to capture your memories?
